Free Wills Month is a national initiative championed by charities, including Age UK, that gives people aged 55 and over the opportunity to have a simple will written (or updated) completely free of charge by one of a number of participating solicitors. The campaign extends across key areas of the UK, including major areas such as London, Liverpool and Essex.
A will can help to clear up any uncertainty about what you want to happen to your estate, reduce the tax you pay, and make it easier for family and friends to deal with your estate in the event that you pass away.
If you don’t have a will, your estate is managed by the courts. Whilst it varies across the UK, there are a few common rules. Most of the time your money will pass to your spouse if you’re married or in a civil partnership, however even long term partners are usually not eligible to receive anything through this type of arbitration. If you don’t have any close living relatives, the whole estate belongs to the government, regardless of your wishes at the time.
An up-to-date will, written by a solicitor, can help ensure your wishes are followed. It allows you to provide for your family and friends and leave a gift to your chosen charities too.
By being part of this campaign we hope you’ll consider supporting Age UK with a gift in your will, although there is no obligation to do so, leave gifts for organisations like charities, or provide a legacy for future generations.
The Free Wills month campaign pays for simple wills from participating solicitors that cover the basics of inheritance and your estate. If the will is more complex and needs additional work, the solicitor may ask for additional payments that are not eligible for funding from the campaign – check with your chosen solicitor beforehand to find out if this is the case.
The campaign has participating solicitors in the following areas:
Blackpool, Chichester, Chesterfield, Coventry, Crawley, Darlington, Eastbourne, Essex, Hastings, Harrogate, Kent, Liverpool, London (Locations within M25), Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northampton, Peterborough, Sheffield, Sunderland, Wirral, Wolverhampton, Worthing.
If you are in one of the above locations, visit the Free Wills Month website and type in your postcode to find out which solicitors are taking part in the campaign in your local area – make sure that your appointment takes place during March to take advantage of the campaign.
It’s worth noting that the numbers of appointments are limited, so you should book your appointment with your chosen solicitor as soon as you can. Once all available appointments are booked the campaign will close – this may be before the end of March.
